Ibn 'Abbas (RAA)
narrated, 'The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) enjoined Zakat-ul-fitr on the one who fasts
(i.e. fasted during the month of Ramadan) to purify him from any indecent act
or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy. It is accepted
as Zakah for the person who pays it before the 'Id prayer and it is Sadaqah
(i.e. voluntary charity) for the person who pays it after the 'Id prayer.'
[Related by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah and
Al-Hakim graded it as Sahih p.263]
Sadaqat-ul-fitr is obligation on each Muslim male or
female who is having either 7.5 tola Gold ( 87.48 gram ) or 52.5 tola silver (612.36 gram
) or having any other thing of which cost is equal to any of above two mentioned
quantity of Gold/Silver beyond one's normal needs. Every person who owns such
an amount has to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr, not only on behalf of himself but also on
behalf of his minor children. The prescribed amount of Sadaqat-ul-fitr is 1.75
Kilograms of wheat or its value in money. This amount is prescribed for paying
Sadaqat-ul-fitr for one person only. If a person has some minor children, the
same amount has to be paid on behalf of each one of them separately.
It is necessary for every Muslim in India to pay Rs 42 as a
Sadaqat-ul-fitr before performing the 'Eid prayer.
It is Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) to pay Zakat ul
Fitr before prayer of Eid al Fitr. Even one can give it after the Eid day but
it is highly advised to do it before performing Eid prayer. If anyone gets late
due to some reason, he can still pay it late to fulfill obligation.
Quantity of Sadaqat-ul-fitr:-
The quantity of Sadaqat-ul-fitr is the half Sa'a( an
Arabic weight measurement unit) of wheat or its flour. In kilogram it will be
1.691 Kg approximately 1.75 kg as per
the present measurement.
Generally, wheat is not available in the market easily, so
for the sake of convenience, it will be better to pay the Sadaqat-ul-fitr
according to the flour of wheat, because
wheat flour is available everywhere in the market.
Nowadays the rate of the wheat flour fluctuates between Rs
22 to Rs 30 per kilogram. If we calculate the cost of the wheat flour as per
the above mentioned criteria then it will be more than Rs 40. So, cautiously it
will be batter to pay Rs 42 per person as the Sadaqat-ul-fitr.
Note:- The people who use high quality of flour , kindly follow
the same pattern to pay the Sadaqat-ul-fitr.
In addition, the order of Sadqa e Fiter is narrated in the
Hadith, that is the Sadqa - e- Fiter is
to be paid in Date, raisin and barley.
Therefore, prosperous and flourishing people of the society
should pay the Sadaqat-ul-fitr according to these items. So
that poor people can get more and more benefits. Accordingly to this criterion,
the rich and wealthy people pay Rs 200 to 400 per person.
The following points must be remembered concerning the
payment of Sadaqat-ul-fitr.
1- Sadaqat-ul-fitr is obligated on each adult male or female
separately, and the relevant adult person himself is responsible to pay it.
2- It is a Sunnah that the Sadaqat-ul-fitr is paid before
performing the 'Eid prayer. It can also be paid before the 'Eid day, but it is
not advisable to delay it up to the performance of'Eid prayer. However, if a
person has failed to pay on its proper time, he should pay it as soon as
possible, whereby the obligation will stand discharged.
3- The Sadaqat-ul-fitr is not necessary on behalf of a child
who was born after the break of dawn in the 'Eid day, nor is it necessary to
pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr on behalf of a person who dies before the dawn of the Eid
4- Sadaqat-ul-fitr should be paid only to a person who is
entitled to receive Zakah.
The wisdom behind this act is are as follows:
- to purify the month long fasting of the Muslims
- to enable the poor and less fortunate to also enjoy the
celebration of Eid.
- to ensure the circulation of wealth in the society.
- to build brotherhood bond between rich & poor.
